Food Supplement CoQ10

____________________

_____

I have been seeing a buttload of TV commercials about a product called CoQ10, which I had never heard of until just recently. I found myself wondering what it was and what it does in the human body. Since I trust almost nobody in the medical field, I did some research on the subject.

From the University of Maryland Medical Center, I found the following:

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance that helps convert food into energy. CoQ10 is found in almost every cell in the body, and it is a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants fight damaging particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Scientists believe free radicals contribute to the aging process, as well as a number of health problems, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants, such as CoQ10, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.
From another source:

Some researchers believe that CoQ10 may help with heart-related conditions, because it can improve energy production in cells, prevent blood clot formation, and act as an antioxidant.

There is much more, many interesting and provocative pieces of information.

As a nutrient, CoQ10 is very difficult to be absorbed in the blood stream. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is highly hydrophobic (repelled by water) and insoluble in water due to its low polarity. This leads to low absorption, and bio-availability issues when we take it as supplements.
Over 50% of an oral intake of CoQ10 is eliminated in the feces. CoQ10 is absorbed by the small intestine and transferred into the lymphatics, where it enters the blood stream. Absorption of CoQ10 is variable and depends in on food intake but also on the amount of lipids present in the food. If you take CoQ10 on on an empty stomach, absorption is much lower compared to when taken with food with high fat content. Also Ubiquinol form of CoQ10 ensures the most bio-availability than regular ubiquinone form. Read below the effectiveness of both forms n terms of bio-availability.

The Late Show

____________________

Last night I forced myself to stay up and watch the new Late Show starring Steven Colbert who replaced David Letterman as host. What a waste of time. I could have been reading, as I usually do at that time of day, or possibly sleeping, which is better yet.

Somebody should remind this Colbert guy that he's no Letterman. Mouth stuffed full of Oreo cookies... that's comedy?

Tomorrow Is Wensday

____________________

If an incorrect pronunciation of a word such as 'ask' can be changed to 'aks' simply by repeated usage by a portion of the population, then why have we not officially changed the spelling of the word Wednesday, which everyone pronounces as Wensday?

Don't know why that bothers me so much.

But it does.

The LA Times Op Ed page says:

Few things stick out more in black American speech than the pronunciation of "ask" as "ax." And when I say that it "sticks out," I'm being polite.

Attitudes about Ebonics have evolved somewhat as hip hop has become America's favorite music. Even the strictest grammarian would have to agree that Kanye West's "Gold Digger" in standard English wouldn't be worth hearing. And Americans from Jesse Pinkman in "Breaking Bad" to Key and Peele get that it's OK to speak "hood" when you're among friends.

But "ax" is a special case. It's often the first thing even black people bring up as an example of bad grammar. Garrard McClendon, a black professor and talk show host, has titled a book "Aks or Ask: The African American Guide to Better English."

Minor Irritant

____________________

In an effort to add verisimilitude to a script, a screenwriter indicates the actor speak with his mouth full of food at the breakfast table while his wife fiddles around with a coffeemaker. I am watching this movie and suddenly the character speaks with his mouth filled with food... I cannot understand what he is saying, and this irritates me mightily. I concentrate on his garbled speech and lose the scene's meaning.

That same movie features background music that is both inappropriate to the scene, too loud, and unnecessary.

A year ago yesterday, in 2014 Joan Rivers died at age 81.

The outspoken comedienne passed after complications from surgery on her vocal cords

Joan Rivers died on September 4 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, having never awoken from a medically induced coma. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office said she died from brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen, and the details of her surgery would be investigated by officials.

After nearly two months of investigations, federal officials said on November 10 that the clinic made a number of mistakes both before and during the surgery. Among those were the clinic's failure to respond to Rivers' deteriorating vital signs, including a severe drop in her blood pressure, possibly administering an incorrect anesthetic dosage, performing a surgical procedure without her consent, and other medical-clinic irregularities

On January 26, 2015, Melissa Rivers filed a malpractice lawsuit against the clinic and doctors performing surgery on her mother.
