Back Home Again In Tucson

____________________

O.K. -- Here I am back in my snug little apartment on the Northeast side of busy, noisy, traffic-jammed Tucson. Of course, the heavy traffic only affects me marginally since I no longer drive a motor vehicle. I'm too old and uncoordinated for such  a grave responsibility, which I discovered when I turned 70, four years ago and had a few sudden and frightening close-calls on the highway.

But that's an old story, reported here on the blog [too] many times before.

I am really looking forward to my morning walk to Fry's Market and back. I missed it while temporarily residing outside the city limits, and missed the greetings of my friends I meet along the way... Roger who lives at Edgewood Apartments halfway between my home and Fry's, and Cedric who also lives there... and Haika, the happy handsome produce clerk who always cries out and wraps her arms around me in a big hug whenever I've been away for any length of time... and Marta who always calls out my name whenever she sees me in the store... and, of course, Jennifer, the beautiful, young, energetic, bouncy, smiling Customer Service clerk from whom I always eagerly buy my twice-weekly lottery tickets. And, whichever somewhat disheveled, dolorous, conversation-starved, homeless person that happens to be holding down the loafer's smoking-bench outside the store's entrance.

Yes, I miss my daily routine, and am always glad to return to it.

HISTORICAL EVENT

On this day in 2012, 16 members of a dissident Amish group in Ohio were convicted of federal hate crimes and conspiracy for forcibly cutting the beards and hair of fellow Amish with whom they had religious differences. The government classified the ruthless attacks as hate crimes because beards and long hair have important religious symbolism to the Amish, who are known for their pacifism, plain style of dress and refusal to use many forms of modern technology.

The men and women convicted in the attacks belonged to a group of about 18 families who lived on an 800-acre farm owned by their leader, Samuel Mullet Sr. The perpetrators -- sometimes wielding shears meant for horse manes—restrained victims and in some cases hurt those who came to their aid. Afterwards, the attackers took photographs in order to further humiliate the injured parties.

On September 20, 2012, the 66-year-old Mullet was convicted along with three of his sons, one of his daughters and 11 other followers. On February 8, 2013, a federal judge in Cleveland sentenced Mullet to 15 years in prison. His co-defendants received sentences ranging from one to seven years behind bars.

Here I am out in the desert with Eva for the rest of the week.

On the TV news this morning I was informed that the space shuttle Endeavour, on the back of a 747 from Houston bound for California will pass over Tucson at about 11:15 (Arizona Time)) and if I remember I will look up from the pool deck at that time. The sky is supposed to be sunny and clear and perhaps I will be able to see it.

Temperatures Rising In Arizona

_____

In preparation for the upcoming summer season filled with 100 plus temperatures, I went over across the street and got my hair cut this morning. And I mean cut. I still have some hair on my head but each individual hair is only about one-quarter inch long. It's what is called a GI haircut. I should take a picture of my head (and face too) and post it here on the blog. I just might do that.

A Windy Day In Tucson

_____

It's early in the morning here in Tucson but the wind is blowing fiercely already, not a steady blow but in fits and bursts. According to the TV weather report the wind is to grow stronger as the day progresses, and a warning of dust storms crossing I-10 is posted. A danger of the spread of existing and newly created wild fires is a distinct possibility.

This seems to be one of those rare days when excusing myself from my daily walk is a definite maybe.

Oh well . . . there are plenty of other things for me to do instead, some computer related chores for the most part.

As part of my ongoing project to construct a Family History of sorts, I have been collecting together a number of old photographs from albums packed away in the closet and then scanning them into a folder (titled Memories) on my computer. These pictures bring back recollections of my younger days, some of them nostalgic and others perhaps better left unrecalled.

The snapshot just below was taken in 1983 when I was living alone in Chicago, a few months before Donna and I were married.

Last Day Of January 2011 In Tucson

The balmy weather we've been having for the last week has changed to skies that are cloudy and the temperature is a bit cooler. This morning I went out by the pool and took a few pictures of the clouds rolling in over the Santa Catalina mountains. You can click each photo to see a larger version.

Here is the first photo, taken at 8:00 A.M.

Here is the next one, taken at 8:30 A.M.

Taken at about 11 A.M.

After noon, the sky cleared and the sun shone down brightly. The wind died and the temperature rose into the 60s.

And that's the weather for today.

Underneath The Western Sky

Last night we had another unexpected visitor. A small tarantula spider was crouched, at just about head-height, on the side of the wood frame of the back door leading out to the swimming pool deck. I did not take a picture of it, and we just came back inside and left it to its own devices. It was gone this morning when I took Eva out to take care of her business.

. . .

The most often used exclamation of displeasure used around the house is, "These pretzels are making me thirsty!" If you don't understand, it might help if you watch this short YouTube video.

. . .

My daily walk down to the Circle-K convenience store (1.7 miles) and back this morning began a bit later than usual and the sun was out and casting down its fierce force of perspiration production -- which means that it was pretty darned hot out there and my clothes were spottily soaked and sodden with sweat when I got back home. According to the TV weather report, the afternoon temperature here in Tucson was 106 degrees and tomorrow it will reach 107 degrees. Oh... and the humidity is high at this time of year.

Now, above my computer-desk chair, the ceiling fan, set to medium speed, is spinning around and its cooling breeze feels quite pleasant to me as I sit composing this compilation of disparate doggerel gleaned from a slippery series of random and unrelated thoughts, sitting here in this spacious and comfortable air-conditioned room.

Here is another view of the sky that I am granted to see and enjoy, this shot taken the day before yesterday.

June In Tucson, AZ

Yesterday afternoon it was 102 degrees F. and a few strong gusts of wind had carried a load of leaves, pods, twigs, and other assorted detritus into the swimming pool. By the time I had skimmed most of it up my body was drenched with sweat. I suppose that I should have shed my clothes and dived into the cooler water... but I didn't.

More about that later . . .

But then today even though the temperature rose to over one hundred degrees it still felt comfortable to me in the early morning (in the 90s) when I went for my daily 3.4 mile walk. It's a "dry" heat, you know. I bought another bottle of Starbucks cappuccino, but this time I opted for the Dark Chocolate Mocha flavor. It was delicious.

Got a Father's Day card from my daughter in Jacksonville, FL yesterday, via the U.S. Mail. Thanks Sandi Jo.

Today is my eldest grandson's birthday. He and Michelle are coming over for a celebratory dinner this evening.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Timothy!

Gonna go to the Supermarket later this afternoon and stock up the refrigerator and the pantry. The kids are going away on business so I'll be alone in the house (with Eva, of course) for the entire upcoming week. A guy's gotta eat...

More about that later.

For now, please... please click the link below and read the message.

A Pleasant Evening Dog-Walk

While out for our walk with Eva yesterday evening JoAnn and I came upon a good-natured fellow leading a white horse

and we were told that the horse's name is Nickolai (Nick for short) and that he loves dogs. Eva, who is extremely 'alpha' (dominant) by nature and barks explosively at most other dogs (and rabbits and coyotes and road-runners) and at some of the cars and bikes we encounter remained surprisingly quite calm. She and Nick even gently nuzzled noses without a sound.

It was pleasant indeed to walk the two and a half miles with such amiable companions.

All in all, I'd be safe to say that I am enjoying my stay here in Mike and JoAnn's Tucson home.

Enjoying it immensely.
