The Concept Of Prayer

The Folly Of Prayer

Is prayer ever answered? Of course not. In fact, religious and philosophical objections to the very study of prayer's efficacy exist. Many interpret Deuteronomy 6:16 "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test"to mean that prayer cannot, or should not, be examined.

The fact is, God never answers any prayers. The entire idea that "God answers prayers" is an illusion created by human imagination.

_____

I have been paying attention to some of the words being bandied about by some of the interviewed GOP candidates and it seems to me that their high-flown rhetoric contains many 50-cent words, of which the actual meaning they quite evidently do not correctly comprehend.

One of those words is:

existential [eggz-is-TEN-shul]
adjective
1. of or relating to existence.
2. concerned with existence, especially human existence as viewed in the theories of existentialism.
3. (of a proposition) affirming or implying the existence of a thing.

Existentialism is a term applied to the work of certain late 19th- and 20th-century philosophers who shared the belief that philosophical thinking begins with the human subject -- not merely the thinking subject, but the acting, feeling, living human individual.

Søren Kierkegaard is generally considered to have been the first existentialist philosopher, though he did not use the term existentialism. He proposed that each individual -- not society or religion -- is solely responsible for giving meaning to life and living it passionately and sincerely ("authentically").

Do Thoughts And Prayers Go Out? To Where?

Tucson Weather Today

_________________

In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, all the celebrity Network News mavens are so reverently reporting on the nation "coming together in prayer" and then the president speechifying once again, as always, about how, "We must (insert action)" and then, as always, personally doing nothing. (Not that there is anything he can do.)

Over and over from the television announcers, in solemn voices is proclaimed that nonsensical old bromide, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims" -- as if such thoughts and prayers are of any use whatsoever.

I often feel that there does indeed exist a God, not the fairy tale God of the Christians nor any other supposedly supernatural creature who is directly involved with humanity and who is the creator of all things in the universe, and who is, by the way, creator of the universe itself.

Oh well. I'm going nowhere with this.

Yesterday at around noon I walked down Camino-Seco to Broadway to conduct some business with my bank. After I did that I began the one mile walk back toward home. In the vicinity of the Sihuaro High School building I noticed, looking North, that the sky and mountains in the noontime  December daylight presented a fascinating view. I always carry my little camera in my pocket so I took it in hand and snapped a few shots. Below is one of them.

More On Power Of Prayer

_________________

I was going to write some more about Prayer but haven't thought enough about it yet. It seems to me that prayer does not have to be the popularly recognized form, the supernatural kind, and it certainly does not have to be self-serving. Perhaps a manifestation of gratitude, of some sort.

But accurately describing it most probably will demand some more serious thought.

Maybe later.

The Power Of Prayer

Making A Difference Through Prayer

I lifted the following photo:

Why would any sane person adopt the nonsensical idea that touching your face to the ground while sticking your butt in the air is going to get the attention of some Deity, and that said Deity will then be more receptive to hearing, and perhaps granting your prayers.

Evangelical christian rituals are just as ridiculous.

It's not that I care what religious people do; it's just that I can't help wondering how any thinking person, in light of today's knowledge, can believe that human beings are actually that important in the scope of the universe. Important to some all-powerful god, important enough to deserve personal favoritism from that god.

But, as always, that's just me, being me.
