FIRST DAY OF SPRING

Spring begins with the vernal equinox at 7:02 A.M. (EDT) on March 20, 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere. Here’s more about the start of spring:

This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

Spring is the time when worms begin to emerge from the earth, ladybugs land on screen doors, green buds appear, birds chirp, and flowers begin to bloom.

Tucson Weather Today

___________________________

I  have closeted my  long pants and my jacket and am now wearing shorts and a t-shirt during my daily walks. Temperatures here in the Tucson area are in the eighties and nineties in the afternoons and in the seventies in the morning hours, which is when I prefer to stroll the boulevard.

Yesterday I took five pictures along my usual walking route.

Interesting  Note: Cosmicopia is a website that explains many scientific principles and debunks some of the popular misconception, such as the erroneous belief that gravity is caused by the spin of the Earth.

Here is what Cosmicopia says about itself:

Cosmicopia contains an abundance (a cornucopia, if you will) of information about cosmic rays, the Earth's magnetosphere, the Sun, space weather, and other exciting topics in space science. Brought to you by the ACE mission and the cosmic ray group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, this site is aimed at the general public and intended to be accessible to interested readers without abackground in this area of science.

HISTORICAL CLIP

On March 20, 1854, former members of the Whig Party met to establish a new party to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. The Republicans rapidly gained supporters in the North. In November 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president over a divided Democratic Party.

The Civil War firmly identified the Republican Party as the party of the victorious North, and after the war the Republican-dominated Congress forced a "Radical Reconstruction" policy on the South, which saw the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution and the granting of equal rights to all Southern citizens. By 1876, the Republican Party had lost control of the South, but it continued to dominate the presidency until the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.
