HISTORICAL EVENT

On this day in1994 the figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked after a practice session at Cobo Hall in Detroit, just one day before the U.S. National Championships and one month before the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, in which Kerrigan was a gold medal favorite. The attacker was the former husband of Kerrigan’s biggest rival, Tonya Harding, who won the U.S. Championships after Kerrigan was forced to withdraw.

Harding pleaded guilty in March 1994 to conspiring to hinder prosecution of the case. Put on three years’ probation, she was fined $100,000 and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. She was later stripped of her 1994 U.S. Championship title and barred from amateur skating competition for life.

Mickey Hargitay was an actor and Mr. Universe 1955. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he was married to Jayne Mansfield, and the father of actress Mariska Hargitay. During their marriage, Hargitay and Mansfield made four movies together, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957), The Loves of Hercules (1960), Promises! Promises! (1963), and L'Amore Primitivo (1964).

She has been the host of the U.S. version of the CBS reality-television program Big Brother since its debut in July 2000. She is also a co-host and the moderator of the CBS daytime show The Talk. Vic Tayback was an American actor. He was a familiar face on television in the 1960s and 70s, appearing on numerous shows as a character actor. Two notable appearances were in the "Et tu, Archie?" fourth season episode of All in the Family as Archie's old friend, Joe Tucker, and as the alien gangster boss Jojo Krako in the Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action" Tayback's most famous role was diner owner Mel Sharples in both the 1974 movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and in the television series, Alice, which ran from 1976 to 1985
