A Sylvia Plath poem titled Child makes me question my ability to think... What does it mean and what makes it a poem? I am not asking this facetiously, I really want to know. (But I don't trust the mavens)
Yesterday (January 18, 2013) I read the poem Child at The Writer's Almanac.
This is not the first time I have been mystified as to the meanings ascribed by literature experts to certain poems. Sometimes I accept their judgments. Sometimes I don't.
For instance . . .
Moonlight, Summer Moonlight
By Emily Bronte
'Tis moonlight, summer moonlight,
All soft and still and fair;
The solemn hour of midnight
Breathes sweet thoughts everywhere,
But most where trees are sending
Their breezy boughs on high,
Or stooping low are lending
A shelter from the sky.
And there in those wild bowers
A lovely form is laid;
Green grass and dew-steeped flowers
Wave gently round her head.
The poem is supposed to be saying something beyond its words.
But, to me, it's not.
