Global Not-Warming Mystery, Etc.

There is no question that climate change is happening; the only arguable point is what part humans are playing in it.
--David Attenborough

According to NASA, the cold waters of Earth’s deep ocean have not warmed measurably since 2005, according to a new NASA study, leaving unsolved the mystery of why global warming appears to have slowed in recent years.

While the upper part of the world’s oceans continue to absorb heat from global warming, ocean depths have not warmed measurably in the last decade. This image shows heat radiating from the Pacific Ocean as imaged by the NASA’s Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System instrument on the Terra satellite. I believe I might have found an existing term that describes a peculiar state of mind which has troubled me for a long time. That term is: Cognitive Dissonance

Wikipedia states: In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values.

Also stated is:

Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance focuses on how humans strive for internal consistency. When inconsistency (dissonance) is experienced, individuals tend to become psychologically uncomfortable and are motivated to attempt to reduce this dissonance, as well as actively avoiding situations and information which are likely to increase it.

So . . .

There will be more on this subject later, after I have given sufficient thought as to how it pertains to me.

About a third of adult humans are ophidiophobic (abnormal fear of snakes) - making this the most common reported phobia.

_____

HISTORICAL EVENT

On this day in 1943, Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, ordered the execution of 96 Americans POWs, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with U.S. forces.

The execution of those remaining American POWs, who were blindfolded and shot in cold blood, remains one of the more brutal episodes of the war in the Pacific.

WORD FOR TODAY

The most general definition of climate change is a change in the statistical properties of the climate system when considered over long periods of time, regardless of cause. Accordingly, fluctuations over periods shorter than a few decades do not represent climate change.

__________

We have no reason to think that climate change is harmful if you look at the world as a whole. Most places, in fact, are better off being warmer than being colder. And historically, the really bad times for the environment and for people have been the cold periods rather than the warm periods.
--Freeman Dyson
